Dons get title tilt back on track

Last minute winner gives Dons win at Holmbury

Report by Grant Flint

The Don's found themselves re-enacting a scene from the hobbit as we ventured to the pitch, only to find no pitch and a rather embarrassed holmbury side who were let down my landlords with no lines painted and had to get out the spray paint to mark out the pitch, but fair play to their efforts to get the game on!

The Don's kicked off and immediately looked comfortable on the ball playing easy football from the back, looking up to find a pass rather than the generic punt it forward. The first wave of attacks came from Simmo, a smart ball by Jono left Simmo one on one with the full back we all know how this ends.... Unfortunately for Simmo (the birthday boy) the keeper made a blinding save to push it out for a corner. Josh stepped up to take the corner with a perfect ball in to the box. Holmbury couldn't quite clear it with a header and it came bouncing out to Grant, who hit it on the half volley from the edge of the box the whole Don's squad where in shock (no-one more than he was) as he found the back of the net 1-0.

Holmbury started asking questions then sending it long to their tall number 15 who held the ball well and kept persisting on taking Cummings and Gunner on (like that was going to happen). With plenty of back and forward play and the Don's looking the most dangerous, we came to half time.

The gaffer mixing things up to keep everyone fresh the game kicked off. The Don's looked a little less concentrated at the start of the second half and holmbury took advantage of this they started to play pushing for a goal, the back line of sammy, george, gunner and jono had their work cut out for them. Unfortunately a hopeful long ball forward from Holmbury caught out the dons defence for the Holmbury striker to slip in and equalise 1-1.

This did not break the Don's, everyone's head lifted, the encouragement from the team continued. The Don's should have had 4/5 goals in the second half with grant hitting the crossbar, josh hitting the post and sausage hitting every tree possible, but the Don's persisted and were rewarded with a ball into grant who held it to then release Ben who hit it first time with his left foot.. GOOOOOOOAAALLLL!!! unbelievable scenes even Chris kamara couldn't believe it. 2-1.

The Don's held their defensive shape and kept the holmbury team at bay. The final whistle went and an important 3 points for the Don's.

Great team effort with the whole squad working hard!
