Lads, that was a fantastic way to bounce back after the disappointment of Row a fortnight before. Admittedly, Milford were missing a few players (as were we) but I couldn't have asked for any more, right from the off. Even though they took the lead, we held our nerve, didn't panic and slowly got ourselves back into the match. That showed character and that battling spirit was probably what pleased me most about yesterday.
Right through the team, everyone delivered. For the second match report on the bounce, Mayur had his best game for Hambledon. Twice in the opening stages he punched well clear when under massive pressure from milfords strikers, the second clearance led to our second goal, ross picking the ball up, threading through to shane who found nick three yards out with a radar-like cross. Lovely stuff. Mayur's kicking was excellent throughout (the one at the end never happened!) and he twice made very important blocks when they were clean through, and a cracking save right at the end. Man of the match deservedly.
The back four were solid, fighting like dogs from the off. Pete was exceptional, and Stu led the line really well, organising throughout in a way that we often forget to do. Marcus also had his best game of the season, never giving an inch and bombing forward on a number of occasions to good effect.
In front of the back four, ross and hainsey snapped at Pateman and Scotty (parkers mate) from the off. They never yielded an inch and their workrate was immense. Neither are just dogs of war; both played the forwards in on occasion with some quality passing and both had long range shots go close. When they both play, we tend to win.........
Shane was a constant thorn in the side of the milford left back, setting up nick for his second and putting a series of cracking crosses in despite a dodgy knee. James grew in confidence as the game went on and ended the second half consistently leaving his full back all ends up in a dominant display, covering every blade of grass/ mud down the left.
Nick led the line superbly. I have literally no memory of his first goal but he collected the match ball with an audacious lob from 45 yards out that left their replacement Keeper all ends up. The only downer of the day was a nasty looking injury to carlo just before half time. The Italian stallion had been at the centre of most of our good work in the first half and had been a good link between the midfield and nick. Get fit soon mate.
Matt Trevail continued his comeback from injury, replacing carlo up front, and looks a quality addition to the squad, providing pace and purpose at centre forward, right mid and right back over his 50 minutes on the pitch!! We will be lucky to get him playing regularly as I am sure matt Kiley's 2's team will be taking him back soon but you are welcome to stay as long as you like, Matt!!!!!!
Craig also made a comeback of his own and took the opportunity with both hands/ feet, opening his Dons account via a 'slight' deflection from the edge of the area. More goals to follow......
So, we won the Derby, worked our socks off and it feels GOOD!! Next up is Odiham away- there is no doubt in my mind that on our day we can beat them, I just need people committing. Please do your best, those of you who are maybes.
