Well, I managed to avoid buying the drinks!! In the end, credit is due to you all for digging your way out of a massive hole at two down after 10 minutes and I think it says a lot about our second half performance to say that we were all disappointed to 'only' get a draw in the end.
Hindhead started like a train and were clearly bang up for this game..... first twenty minutes they were the better team and, I hate to say it, just seemed to want it more. Their first goal caught us by surprise and the finish was excellent but the second was difficult to accept, with them walking through the defence with ease and slotting home.
We rallied and slowly got going, with Carlo and Hainsey in particular, trying to drag us back into the game. Carlo sent a corner in, which hit a Hindhead arm, and then slotted home the resulting penalty, sending the keeper the wrong way.
We huffed and puffed but Hindhead were comfortable and could easily have got a third before half time.
I felt we needed some more energy in the second half and Matt really got things moving, as we came out with a bang. The equaliser had been coming when Hainsey put yet another pinpoint cross in to Nick, who found the top corner with an excellent header on the hour.
Hainsey was really beginning to pull the strings now in midfield, with barnes and suarez dominating their full backs but we just couldn't find the winner. In the end, we have to settle for a point and in fairness, Hindhead could have nicked it with a series of corners in the last ten minutes, which Andy and the back four defended commendably.
So, in summary, a very flat start, perhaps we underestimated Hindhead (who played the best I have seen them and were certainly fired up). Perhaps I should have played three in the middle to start off, as I have before against them, perhaps I shouldn't have been so hungover, perhaps we should have been more focussed from the kick off. Lot of ifs, buts and maybes but what is for sure is that the spirit you all showed to rescue a point was commendable and I am very proud of the way we got ourselves back into the game (maybe a half time hairdryer IS effective after all!!).
Going forward, please keep your fitness up over the next fortnight and please can we collectively never under-estimate a team again. This is a tough league and all the teams are good enough to punish a side not fully focussed.
Next game is in a fortnight away at Popley, who have had a tricky start to the season since coming up. Don't under-estimate them!!
MOTM-I know he hates playing there but ritchie had a very solid game at the back, barnes was once again excellent for the whole game, Hainsey's class on the ball was apparent once again and is proving an excellent signing (thank you very much!!) but Carlo pretty much dragged us out of our malaise in the first half single handed, scored a goal and never stopped running, so MOTM for the second game in three is the Italian stallion.
