Fine Margins

Dons still looking for first league win of season.

Well this wasn't in the script! A week after we knocked Row out of the cup with a superb, spirited performance we succumbed to an average Odiham team with a subdued performance well below the standards set the week before.

I don't know why, but we seemed flat as soon as the warm up started, and took this lethargy into the game, with us second best for much of the opening half hour.

That said, despite our slumbers, Odiham never really looked like scoring, with the back four, superbly marshalled by Pete, looking solid and limiting Odiham to long range efforts that Cat could have saved with his eyes shut. In front of us, Neil and Stu Parker worked their socks off in midfield, breaking up play wherever they could. At the other end, we fashioned three or four great chances in the first half, whilst being nowhere near our fluent best. One cross from Cosser in particular deserved better.

I made changes at half time simply to get some pace and energy into the team- it was nothing against Cos or Dean (I could have subbed most of the team!!) but we needed more energy about us, and I felt second half we were hungrier, sharper and finally winning second balls.

We had the lion’s share of the chances but fell to a sucker punch in the 80th minute when they had a corner. I didn't see what happened, but by all accounts, Carlo was molested to the floor and his assailant took full advantage, burying his header into the corner, giving Cat no chance. Clearly the ref should have disallowed it but didn't see it.

We went straight up the other end and I really don't know how we didn't get a penalty for the hack on Cosser, and then their keeper made a couple more great saves and it was just not to be. No point blaming the ref; we should have been well ahead by this stage.

We didn't deserve to lose the game but my frustrations stem from the fact that we just weren't 'on it' for the first half an hour despite having a really strong team out there. This gave Odiham confidence and allowed them into the game. That said, they were playing two divisions above us last year so maybe I am being a bit harsh on us but I think we have set our own high standards over the last 12 months so to slip below this is frustrating.

Anyway, we have two massive cup games ahead of us, let's be up for these lads, lay off the pop the night before and book our place in both cup quarter finals. We have a big season ahead of us- don't forget we lost our first two league games last year and went on a run that saw us top at Christmas. Let's do it again. The good news is we have played three very established sides this season and although the results haven't always gone our way, with a bit more luck and composure we would still be unbeaten!! Fine margins. We are definitely not out of our depth in this league. No chance.

Man of the match: Neil and Parker get a mention for playing so well against four opponents that you could barely tell, Shane was really solid at both left and right back, but Pete was MOM for me, by a mile. Dominated his man and organised the back line imperiously.
