Defeat at the Death

Dons knocked out of Cup in last minute

A great effort yesterday boys; we put absolutely everything into the game and were about 20 seconds from penalties against a very experienced Div 1 side playing on a massive pitch that clearly suited them. Yes, gutting to lose at the last, and really frustrating, but I was really proud of our individual and collective efforts in the end. If we keep this up, we will continue to improve.

First 20 we were all at sea; my clever tactical move to play three in the middle and attack their fullbacks turned out to be worse than one of Baldrick's cunning plans, and they absolutely shat on us in the opening period. One nil down on 15 and it could have been worse. We switched to 442 (old school) and gradually got ourselves back into the game, with Cos poaching an equaliser just before half time.

Hugh came on for the second half and gave us a bit more to aim for up top. We started really well and were probably the better team for a bit but they scored a fortuitous goal from a cross and our heads dipped for a bit. But again we fought back, and again got ourselves back in the game with a wonderful half volley from Cos from 20 yards out. Five goals in 2 games since I subbed him at halftime. I should do it more often......... (joke).

We were the better team and really attacked Row (quite literally- Andy took their defenders teeth out and Carlo started practicing some dark arts). We had a number of chances and half chances but couldn't convert. At the other end, Ritchie wasn't really troubled, well protected by the back four, with Tom and Nick in the middle particularly dominant.

Then came the sucker punch. 93rd minute, corner comes in, their guys is all over Tom but ref misses it (again) and the ball is bundled home. No time for the restart, and the whistle is blown.

A great performance and a really spirited comeback after that poor opening salvo. Special mention to Cos for two more goals, carlo and Parker for absolutely mammoth performances in the middle, Ritchie for doing us a massive favour by going in goal and Tom for a fantastic first start of the season. Man of the match goes to nick for playing out of position and dominating the back line all day long.
