In the end it was a bit of a thrashing- if it was a boxing match the ref would have stopped things on the hour as the 10 men of Folly Hill finally ran out of steam, against a Hambledon team baying for blood, playing down the hill and finding passes with ease. It helped that we had no less than five very useful subs to hammer home the advantage- but you can only beat what's In front of you, as the old cliche goes. In the end, Folly Hill were well beaten. (17-3 on aggregate over three games by the way).
Despite the end result, the first half an hour was pretty even- FH defended resolutely and gobbled up our long balls without much difficulty. We scored through Cosser after about 15 minutes- very route one- flick on from Nick, and Coss made no mistake, but we let them back into the game soon after when we failed to clear our lines, and the rest of the half proved frustrating, with numerous chances and half chances going begging, as well as two goals that were (probably rightly) disallowed. Jim had two glorious chances in quick succession but it wasn't to be.
One all at half time against 10 men wasn't in the script but in truth, we had done a lot of the hard work by then- they were chasing shadows towards the end of the half, and in a way, it was a shame half time came when it did, such was our dominance against their 10 men.
Once we scored early in the second half, the floodgates opened, with Cosser scoring two more, Harman poaching one and Barnes notching his third of the season in quick succession. They were absolutely knackered and we probably should have scored more before Ross opened his account from distance right at the end, courtesy of some very generous goalkeeping.
We were really good in the second half- yes they were knackered but we began to play the ball in to feet much better and used the width of the pitch to stretch the game. Let's take that second half performance into our next few games.
Team: Dave, Shane, alan l, Pete, grandpa, alan r, Parker, andy, Barnes, Cosser, nick. Subs: carlo, Tom, Ross, dean, me
Man of the match: Andy's relentless running up and down the line, harassing the opposition really set the tone, and Parker also gets a mention for a literally massive performance at centre mid but Cosser's hattrick stands out- talk about teaching the manager a lesson!!!!
