After Tuesdays excellent win over Guildford United the Dons knew a point would be enough to secure the title irrespective of what Hersham did. They welcomed basement boys Lightwater to Badger Park who had won one game all season. Straight forward? Not in the slightest as Lightwater were a completely different team from the 10-0 demolition earlier in the season. Packed with new players and first teamers.
Louis had to have his arm twisted to play by Carlo 'The Italia Mafia' Moriano and Boxall came back into the squad with Cook and Toby. The scene was set at a glorious Badger Park. But the mood and the weather soon changed and it was apparent from the off that Lightwater were bang up for this as the Dons struggled to get going.
Callum was called into action with a long range shot that skidded on the slick surface but he gathered at the second attempt. Despite the poor start from the Dons they had the best chances to get the games first goal. Cheese released Louis down the right and his pull back found Ben. He was taken from behind in the box but no penalty and a corner. Although the defender got some of the ball he came from behind. It shouldn't had mattered as Batch put a free header from the resulting Jaime Grove corner straight at the keeper from six yards.
Lightwater had their own shout for a penalty as Cal and Bradley were caught by the quick striker but he slipped at the vital point but in real time it looked a certain penalty. Let off. A long ball from Callum was missed by the defence and Ben was in on goal, the keeper was quickly out and Ben's lob over him was just over. The Dons were made to pay for this when a long shot from their left mid was going harmlessly wide but flicked up off Boxall for their midfielder to steal a march on Batch and head home. 0-1 Game on.
Callum had to be alert to punch a long range shot away. Before Allen released Louis on goal but the keeper was out quickly to save well. The quick striker for Lightwater was causing issues and Callum had to beat away his shot at his near post. Before the Lightwater keeper did well to palm Dave Tye's long range shot wide. The match was end to end now and Batch saw a throw go straight in with the keeper smartly leaving.
Half time and the Dons went in 1-0 down, although they had not played well they were creating numerous chances.
They had the all important equalizer straight after the break when a Boxall freekick was played back across the goal by Ben Hodkin for Cheese to finish 1-1 Game on. Ben played in Louis and with Cookie supporting he could only find the keeper again. A long ball into the space left by Cookie almost caught the Dons out but the shot was just wide. The game was really stretched now but Lights had their noses in front after the left winger took a lovely touch past Petri before being cleaned out by Batch. Who was lucky to stay on the pitch being on a yellow already. The resulting spot kick was put in the top corner 1-2
Batch saw a header from a Jamie Grove corner just wide. And then disaster and straight forward ling ball over the top caught the Dons out and the quick striker was onto it in a flash to slot home. 1-3 down and the Dons title hopes were in tatters, what were the Dons made of? Toby was introduced up top to inject some pace. Lightwater had a few long range shots as they looked to put the game to bed.
But the Dons had a route back in when Toby didn't let the defence settle and he was onto a poor clearance. His cross into the box was met by Cheese who looped a great finish into the top corner giving the keeper no chance. Could the Dons salvage something. Boxall put a header from a Batch throw onto the outside of the post as the Dons were knocking o the door. Louis saw a shot dealt with my the keeper. Before Paul Cook spread the ball to Louis, half hearted calls for hand ball. He played it into Gav who spread out wide to Petri. Who composed himself to put a cracking cross in for Louis to head home late on. Scenes.
The final whistle went and the Dons were relived to have secured the title with Hersham getting a late winner against Uni.
With only one defeat all season the Dons were worthy winners but were pushed all the way by a very good Hersham team.
