The Dons were at the Business end of the season with two tricky home games remaining but they now had things in their own hands after Saturday's win against Hersham. Kiley and Cook were injury casualties and Toby was working. So Seb, Luffy and Louis were welcomed in to a strong squad.
Despite a 6-1 win over Guildford earlier in the season, the Dons knew this was a potential banana skin and Guildford would ask some serious questions of the Dons.
From the first whistle, the Dons were rampant - pressing high and keeping Guildford penned into their half. It wasn't long before they engineered the first clear chance of the game. Dave won the ball in midfield, leaving Cheese to slip the ball through to Ben. One on one with the 'keeper, he tucked the ball into the far corner to give the Dons the perfect start. The attacks continued as Jamie tested the 'keeper from the edge of the box, Louis had a header saved, and Cheese saw a long-range effort come back off the post. With some rare defending to do at the other end, Luffy and Batch sandwiched a Guildford attacker and were lucky to escape without giving away a penalty.
The revival continued as Guildford were starting to get a foothold in the game, with Cal having to get down to save a speculative long-range shot. However, the more Guildford pressed, the more they left themselves open at the back. Allen nipped in to win the ball in midfield, before Jamie played a sumptuous early cross to Ben. He took a touch into the box, then smashed home at the near post. The Dons were flying and really starting to play some good football now, with Louis, Dave, Cheese and Ben all involved. Ben had a chance for a first half hat trick when Cheese broke from midfield, sold the defender a dummy and slipped him through, but the striker lifted his shot over the bar. Batch picked up his customary yellow card, but the Dons were otherwise untroubled in a dominant first half. The message at half time was clear - more of the same!
The second half started in the same pattern as the first, with Dons pressing high and creating lots of chances. Louis skipped past his man in the box and pulled back to Ben, but he couldn't get proper contact on his flick and the 'keeper was able to save. He didn't have to wait long for the next chance though, as Louis continued to cause problems down the right-hand side. He drilled the ball across goal and Ben was on hand to tap home.
The defence continued to marshal Guildford's attack superbly, with the only half chance coming from a poor clearance, but Cal saved easily. At the other end, Dave blazed high and wide before Ben had another chance to increase his goal tally, but his volley was straight at the 'keeper. Bradbury and Jamie were getting a lot of joy down Guildford's right, and they put together a neat passing move to tee-up Gav who slotted home to put the Dons 4-0 up. They soon had their fifth, with Batch heading in from a Jamie corner for his third goal of the season. Louis and Seb both had chances to score but their shots went just wide. The icing was then on the cake, as Seb released Jamie down the left, he cut back inside and crossed for Louis. The 'keeper pulled off a great save, but Seb was on hand to tuck away to rebound and give the Dons a thoroughly deserved 6-0 win.
MOTM - Ben Hodkin, worked tirelessly throughout and took his hat trick well.
One game remains with a point needed to secure the title. Lightwater seem to have a completely new team from the earlier match in the season and will be up for beating the Dons. So one last push to get over the line.
Come On You Dons
