Dons snatch another late winner

The Dons were left counting the costs of Tuesdays win at Surrey sports Park. With Joel Alderton ruled out for the season with a shoulder injury and Dave Tye picking up a hamstring strain. Going shopping with Mrs instead of supporting the lads. Petri had recovered from his clash of heads as the Dons also lost Louis to the first team. Gav, Kiley, Bradbury and Toby were all back in the squad. As the Dons looked to pick up another 3 vital points in a local derby.

Despite a good win mid-week, and calls to start the game with the same intensity, the Dons were again off the pace for most of the first half. Everyone seemed to be struggling with the wind and sloping Chidd pitch, as most of the play was in the air. Charlie had a long-range effort just wide, but the best chance of scoring seemed to be coming from set pieces. Boxall first saw a header tipped onto the bar, before Gav headed across goal from a free kick. Chidd weren't causing too many problems at the other end, with most of their through balls rolling through to Callum, although they did have one or two long range efforts. The big talking point came right at the end of the half, with Charlie rolling his man from a Kiley free kick, he was cynically wrestled to the ground for an obvious penalty. The referee, who had already made a couple of strange decisions, appeared to blow up but then incredibly called for half time instead. Even the Chidd players were walking off the pitch laughing!

Regardless, the Dons needed to up their game and wouldn't have deserved to go in ahead. The call from the bench was to focus on improving passing, which had been wasteful first half. Cheese was pushed up top with Ben in a 4-4-2 as Jamie and Bradbury came on in midfield.

The Dons started brighter, and were now playing downhill. The change in shape seemed to be helping, and the Dons had their first chance of the half when Charlie and Cheese broke from a corner, the later beating his man in the box but lifting his shot over the bar. Ben had a similar chance a few minutes later, cutting in from the left but also firing high. Just when the Dons felt like they were starting to control the game, the ref made another big call. The Chidd striker turned inside Cookie and went to ground, with the ref pointing to the spot despite the questionable contact. Cookie then awarded himself Dick of the Week for blatant dissent when he said 'But I didn't touch him?'.

Such outrageous language rightly earnt him a sinbin and the Dons were 1-0 down and with ten men for next ten minutes. They did at least appear to have been wound up by the decisions, and appeared more up for the fight as Toby came on to add some pace up front. The Dons pushed Chidd back with a few corners and were eventually rewarded with a fortunate decision of their own. The ball dropped to Kiley who sliced his shot towards goal, but appeared to be blocked on the line by a Chidd hand. The ref awarded the pen, and gave the Chidd defender his marching orders for preventing a goal scoring opportunity. Boxall stepped up to slot home and now the Dons had the momentum.

The game was level, and with Cookie coming back on there was a two-player swing. The ref was still trying to make the game about him, giving some strange decisions both ways. He was even winding the Chidd bench up, saying 'long enough' when asked how much time was on the clock. We then had a questionable decision from the lino when Boxall, who was carrying an injury by now, limped through on goal and finished before the flag was raised. All the action was now in the Chidd half, and Bradbury's set piece delivery was proving to be a real asset. Batch smashed a volley over after a corner, and Toby was almost put through on goal until the lino again raised his flag. With only minutes to go, Jamie took a free-kick from deep and Batch dived to head home at the back post, giving the Dons their second last ditch winner of the week.

MOM -Batch all action performance and vital goal.

A week off from league action as the Dons have a friendly against Farncombe United before they face three games in a week to finish off the season.
