The games kept coming for the Reserves after Saturdays win against Shottermill they faced a very tricky away trip to face the students. As the students finished watching the latest Homes under the Hammer and strolled down for a game. The Reserves had a tough day at work and a rush to get to the game.
They were greeted at reception by no booking has been made. Confusion followed, would we be playing at all. Eventually found the students warming up at the bottom of the site all very laid back without a care in the world. Eventually after a lot of back and fourth the game was played on the 3G at the bottom much to Boxalls disgust.
Uni started well, putting the Dons on the back foot from the off with their impressive CM dictating play. Despite no real chances, they swung in a number of decent corners that Callum and batch were equal to in the air. It got worse for the Dons when a corner of their own led to Joel going off with a suspected dislocated shoulder. Boxall dropped back into defence and Cheese came on to join Dave and Josh in the midfield. The Dons still hadn't settled in the game, with Batch surviving a red card shout - luckily for him Dave was covering behind. The only real chance fell to Ben, who hooked a volley over the bar with his back to goal. Jamie and Joe were lively on the wings and looked the best chance of scoring, but they went into half-time at 0-0. With Boxall putting two headers over from corners
Far from their best, but not bad to be level considering this was a good Uni team. The chat was all about staying in the game, being disciplined, and making the most of any chances. Louis and Charlie were introduced to refresh the attack. Second half started much better, with the Dons pressing high and forcing Uni into a few poor long balls. Josh was starting to dominate in midfield, and looking to feed Louis, Charlie and Cheese through. Closest the Dons came ended up being from a Uni player - Charlie broke down the left and fed the ball into Cheese, but the defender dived in to clear and needed a good save from the 'keeper to prevent the own goal. The Dons were dealt another injury blow when Dave Tye felt his hammy and was forced off, with Cheese dropping back and Ben brought back on up front. Despite being stretched, and players out of position, they were still pegging Uni back and looked the more likely to score, with Louis looking dangerous. The next player down was Petri, who clashed heads with his winger and was forced off with Jamie stepping in at RB. The Dons now had half the defence made up of a winger and a midfielder, and a midfield made up of an attacking midfielder and a striker.
Despite tiring, and a number of players carrying knocks, they continued to hold on, restricting Uni to a couple of long-range efforts and a few corners. Finally the Dons had the breakthrough when a ball was played past the defence, Louis ran from deep to beat the 'keeper and smash home from a tight angle. With only minutes to go, they had to stay focused, and Boxall bought some time with a needless clearance over the fence. Final whistle, and a huge victory against a strong and in-form Uni side. Didn't play their best football, but dug in and got the win.
MOTM - Joe Dudgeon, brilliant display, always dangerous and worked hard tracking back to keep Uni quiet on his wing.
