The Dons travelled to Cranleigh looking to build on last weeks impressive performance against Hersham. With Louis and Charlie with the first team. Gav went with the A team for minutes as Toby and Matt were added to the squad.
The dons were urged not to take anything for granted and they would be in for a tough test. A fast start was needed to take the game to Cranleigh and move the ball quickly. The Dons started slowly and looked like they had just come out of lock down. Cranleigh were hungrier and quicker to the first and second balls as the Dons struggled to get out of second gear.
Cranleigh were pushing the Dons back and were having shots from distance with Callum having to be alert and tip over. Hambledon couldn't string two passes together. Misplacing or slicing their passes and frankly looked second best all over the park. The warning signs had been there for a while. And Cranleigh had the goal their performance warranted. With the Rob Denton staying up from a corner to turn into Messi and wall round 4 Hambledon statues to side foot home.
There was a lot of looking around but frankly it was a little embarrassing as no one took action. Would this wake the Dons up the answer was simply no as they huffed and puffed. The management team had seen enough and Ben was introduced for Dave. Harsh on Dave as any one of the outfield players could have been replaced.
The Dons were given a life line when a long Batch throw was flicked into his own net by the Cranleigh goal scorer. 1-1. The Dons should have taken a very undeserved lead in at the break when Joel Alderton put a peach of a cross in to be headed home brilliantly by Jay Grove beating his man. However the flag went up. For a very dodgy offside. Appreciate the Refs job is very hard but when a goal is so clearly onside would be nice to be strong and over rule the decision. The Ref FA mentor confirmed at half time it was well onside but that didn't help the Dons.
Half time and the riot act was read. Toby was introduced for Joe as the Dons would surely go on and take on a tiring Cranleigh team. It never really materialized in the second half and you couldn't say the Cranes goal was under siege. Toby blasted high and wide when in round the back.
And then Cranleigh had their noses infront. A comedy of errors lead to a few cleared off the line. With Petri not managing to sort his feet and Dave Webb smashed home on the third attempt. There was still plenty of time to salvage something from the game as Matt Kiley came on for the injured Box.
The Dons were now pushing hard with a succession of corners and the game was getting fractious. Cranleigh took real exception to a Kiley challenge before petri crudely took out their young winger. The baying crowd were now on the refs back but he was unfazed.
The Dons had themselves level with the best move of the match with Jay Grove playing in Toby who coolly finished. Now Cranleigh were hanging on. As the Dons sought to steal an unlikely 3 points. The best chance falling to Joel but he couldn't get any real power on a header that the keeper claimed easily.
Full time and the Dons took an undeserved point in a poor performance. They travel to Keens Park Tuesday in a tough midweek game. They will need to find their form quickly or will see any title hopes evaporate.
