The Dons had the unwelcome second visit to Frimley Rec which is really pushing Chobham for the worse venue to play football in the league. At least it was a bigger pitch this week compared to Woking & Horsell last week. The Dons were looking to build on three straight wins and had a big squad to choose from. Paul Cook and Max Dodson went with the A team and Marlon Gibson with the Vets to show the strength and depth. With Charlie Reddick coming back after a cameo with first team last week.
After Boxall nearly crocked himself trying to race Grant in the warm up Paul Wicks was asked to drop deeper to see if Box could run off the injury. It soon became apparent he just didn’t fancy completing the warm up and was fine.
It was a tricky pitch but both sides started brightly in what would be a highly competitive match. The Dons had an early goal within the first five minutes. Matt Trevail found himself in the box and his header was punched on by Paul Wicks which the keeper managed to save but Cheesman was on hand to follow up and continue his hot streak in front of goal.
0-1
Windlesham were looking to find their tricky right mid at every opportunity and were forcing a sucession of set pieces which their big team were a constant threat. Simon Petri got his now customary clearance of the line as the Dons were being pinned in. They were then indebted to a fine save from Ian Day as he somehow tipped over a curling shot destined for the top corner.
However Windlesham scored from the resulting corner to level the game.
1-1
They nearly had the lead as the Dons stood off their striker and he saw his shot from outside the box come back off the post into the grateful arms of Ian Day. The Dons started to settle but were looking to play the killer pass straight through the middle instead of finding the wings. To be fair the usual custom flag happy Windlesham lino was having a day off.
However the Dons had the lead again after a long ball was not dealt with, Joe Dudgeon didn’t give up the chase and their keeper and defender got in a muddle. The resulting clearance fell to Paul Wicks 30 yards out. With the goal open he thought about a shot but realised he is not Zlatan so found Cheesman. His pass to Joe was crossed to the far post for Charlie Reddick to sweep home for his first goal on returning to the Dons.
1-2
Half time
More of the same battle was requested but a bit more calm on the ball and final third choice. The Dons were nearly in early in the second half as Charlie spread play and Joe Dudgeon was nearly in but his touch got him wide and the cross just evaded Cheesman at the far post.
The Dons were playing themselves in trouble and got a let off after a throw in was over played with Windlesham breaking and the striker just putting his shot over. However they had the eqauliser soon after as a serious of failed clearances the ball was played across the goal. With Matt Trevail well placed at the far post a quick River Dance in the mud let their midfielder smah home.
2-2
Windlesham were clearly now up for this sensing blood, what were the Dons made off? Andy Stokoe was introduced for Joe to add some fresh legs. Then out of no where the excellent dave Tye smashed home from 35 yards.
2-3
Great work from Charlie and Andy on the left, Charlie put a great ball to the far post but Cheesman could only find the side netting. Grant Flint was then introduced for surely the most eventful 7 minutes of his Dons career.
Boxall put in a deep freekick which was knocked across the face of goal for Grant to head home from a couple of yards. And give the Dons an important two goal cushion.
2-4
Grant was then booked for a late tackle despite numerous offences by Windlesham in the game which went unpunished. He was then crocked from a heavy tackle himself and forced off with Charlie going back on.
The Dons then put the game to bed from a corner. To prevent any counter they didn’t commit many forward so with some questionable keeper positioning Charlie Reddick saw a gap and curled in straight from the corner.
2-5 a surely game over with 5 left.
To be fair Windlesham kept coming but the excellent pairing of Ollie and Joel were with standing anything thrown at them. Matt Kiley was introduced for Paul Wicks to see the game out.
Ian Day claimed another set piece and with team mates urging him to relax he found Cheesman with this clearance and he was through on goal to make no mistake to grab his second goal.
2-6 Job Done.
There was still time for another goal after Ollie Cummings squashed two Windlesham players on the edge of the box. The Dons were caught sleeping from the freekick expecting a shot. A simple pass was converted home.
3-6
Mom - Dave Tye just edging Paul Wicks in what was an excellent performance. Capped off by a very important goal with the score at 2-2.
This was a very important win for the Dons who had already been beaten by Windlesham twice this season. Giving them an 8 point lead against their opponents.
A long way to go in the league with many twists and turns left in what is such a competitive division.
