Top of the Table University of Surrey hosted Hambledon on Saturday afternoon, for what proved to be a fiery game.
The hosts were on a good run of form, but so were the visitors.
The opening 15 mintues was tense with both sides feeling each other out early on. Hambledon had to be on their toes with Uni playing a strong striker up front who threatend at times with his strength and pace.
Some neat play down the left hand side saw Uni drive in a low cross, but Hambledons no1 was there to claim the ball before any danger could arise.
With the uni playing out from the back, Hambledon pressed from the front and capitalised from the goalkeeprs mistake. A loose pass to his centre back was raced onto by Lewis Tucker who hit his first time shot low into the bottom right hand corner to give the away side the lead.
0-1.
The remainder of the half saw both sides have half chances but neither team could make anything count and the referee blew for half time.
HT 0-1 to Hambledon.
The same pressing, aggresiveness and intensity was advised by The Dons manager at half time and with only 5 minutes played in the second half, it proved to cost the away side. With slight hesitation from the defence, and a through ball played behind the line, The Dons keeper came rushing out of his goal, collected the ball from the Uni strikers feet but came from behind and took him out. Penalty.
Goal and all of a sudden it was game on.
1-1.
The following 15 minutes saw Uni pressing a lot more and looking to strike with the iron was hot. The Dons defence (from striker to defenders) worked endlessly to prevent the home side from taking the lead. It could have got a lot worse for the away side when a Uni player glanced his header onto the post.
Hambledon sensing danger stepped up a gear again and took control of the game. Some nice play down the right from our midfielder wadey, saw him cut inside and lay a ball into our strikers path about 22 yards out. He opened his body up and unleashed a striker into the top right corner of the goal!
1-2..
The next goal really sealed the game and came shortly after the second. A bit of ping pong in the box and a rebounding shot came off our strikers boot and flew into the left hand corner and gave the Man Of The Match Lewis Tucker his hat trick for the day.
Uni pressed a bit more for the final 10 minutes but to no end, and with just 3 minutes left on the clock, The Dons left back Adam decided to go on a crazy run past 4/5 uni players. He laid his ball into the path of our tricky winger Will who lashed a ball across the box. Our RB who was back on for a cameo up top just missed the ball with it falling into the path of our other winger connor who made no mistake is smashing the ball into the net to seal all 3 points for the away side.
1-4.
Next up is our Quarter Final against Shottermill.
Great win, Great momentum and Great spirit amongst the squad right now.
